Instilling curiosity and a joy of learning in each child

The Early Years are a truly special time in a child's life, filled with discovery, imagination and the joy of learning. At Garden House School, we provide a warm, nurturing and stimulating environment where every child is encouraged to explore, question and grow in confidence.
A love of learning is at the heart of everything we do. Through a carefully balanced programme of academic, creative and social development, children build the foundations they need for future success while developing independence, resilience and strong friendships without compromising on who they are.
Guided by scientific research, our experienced staff create engaging opportunities for children to learn through play, creativity and hands-on experiences. We recognise that every child is unique and ensure each one feels happy, secure and valued as they begin their educational journey.
There is something wonderfully distinctive about the Early Years at Garden House. Filled with conversation, creativity and purposeful play, our classrooms are places where children's natural curiosity is celebrated and their ideas are taken seriously. Every day brings opportunities to think, explore and make new discoveries, supported by teachers who know each child as an individual.
We hope this website captures some of the warmth, energy and sense of possibility that define life in the Early Years, and we look forward to welcoming your family to Garden House School.
As children move into Kindergarten, they benefit from an even wider range of opportunities designed to enrich their learning and support their personal development. Alongside a stimulating classroom experience, children enjoy access to specialist facilities and activities that broaden their horizons and encourage them to explore new interests.
Regular gymnastics sessions at the main school help to develop coordination, balance, strength and confidence, while Forest School experiences in Battersea Park provide valuable opportunities for outdoor learning, discovery and adventure.
These experiences encourage children to become resilient, resourceful and independent learners. Through hands-on exploration and play, they develop creativity, problem-solving skills and a deeper understanding of the world around them. Time spent outdoors also fosters a connection with nature and an appreciation for the environment, supporting children's emotional wellbeing and sense of curiosity.
As children prepare for the transition into the Preparatory School, we ensure that the process is carefully planned and thoughtfully supported. Strong links between year groups, familiar routines and close communication with families help children move forward with confidence and excitement.
At Garden House, the Early Years provide the foundation for future success, nurturing happy, confident and capable learners. Above all, we aim to instil a lifelong love of learning, placing each child's interests, strengths and individuality at the heart of everything we do.
Garden House School Kindergarten is based in its own dedicated setting on Sedding Street beside Holy Trinity Church at Sloane Square and takes children when they are three, turning four. Children who join our Kindergarten automatically join the main school the following year, not needing another assessment.
Most children join the Preparatory year when they are four, going on five. From Preparatory onwards, children are taught in single-sex classes, with regular opportunities to come together for shared activities and play.
The Early Years follow the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum, covering all seven areas of learning: Communication and Language, Literacy, Mathematics, Understanding the World, Expressive Arts and Design, Personal, Social and Emotional Development, and Physical Development. Learning is delivered by experienced class teachers alongside specialist teaching in subjects such as Sport, French, Music, Ballet and Drama.
With an exceptionally high staff-to-pupil ratio, every child at Garden House is known, understood and encouraged as an individual. From the very start, children are challenged to think independently, articulate their ideas and develop confidence in their own abilities. Learning is carefully planned to build strong foundations while nurturing the curiosity and enthusiasm that are hallmarks of a Garden House education.
Kindness, care and wellbeing are central to everything we do. We place great emphasis on ensuring that children feel happy, secure and valued, particularly as they settle into school life. Through warm relationships, consistent routines and close partnerships with families, children quickly develop a sense of belonging and the confidence to embrace new experiences, friendships and challenges.
